A lot of foreigners who want to work in Russia aim to obtain a work visa to Russia. This type of visa allows you to cross the Russian border multiple times and stay in Russia for up to 3 years.
There are some important aspects to the procedure of applying for a work visa. In order to obtain this type of visa, a foreigner must be employed by a Russian entity, have a work permit and invitation for a work visa.
In order to procure an invitation for a work visa, a company that is employing a foreigner, should be registered (accredited) in the Department of Migration of the Central Administration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. Company accreditation and application for the invitation are processed simultaneously. Only those accredited on behalf of a company may apply for an invitation for a work visa.
Invitations for a work visa are processed and issued within 14 business days.
When a company has received the invitation, they send it to their foreign employee, who then applies for a visa in a Russian consulate in his/her country.
Validity period of a work visa to Russia
Visa validity period depends on a work permit type and passport validity period.
Visas for the foreigners who have a standard work permit are usually issued for 1 year.
Visas for highly qualified specialists (HQS) can be issued for the period of up to 3 years.

Documents required for a work visa to Russia
- Application for a work permit to the Department of Migration with an acceptance mark
- The foreign citizen’s passport copy (pages with a photo and identification details)
- Letter of guarantee from the employer stating that accommodation and medical security of the foreigner will be provided during his/her stay in Russia
- Labor contract copy
- State duty payment receipt or payment order
- Copy of a permit to employ foreign workers (if a visa invitation is issued based on a standard work permit)
- Inventory of provided documents
